I would like to welcome you all at English language Institute (ELI), United International University.
English Language Institute of United International University started functioning from day one of the university’s establishment in 2003. The primary objective of this institute is to analyze the language need of the students, design and update necessary courses from time to time. The institute proffers two courses, namely English I and English II. Both the courses are compulsory for the students of School of Business and Economics and School of Science and Engineering.
English I is the first fundamental English course that is designed to address and offer to eliminate students’ deficiency in English language skills. English I encompasses and enhances the four skills of English language. It is divided into two major segments: Speaking & Listening and Reading & Writing. This course aims at developing speaking and communication skills, academic writing, critical reading, and listening skills. It includes reading comprehension, grammatical items, speaking activities (impromptu and rehearsed), and a number of listening activities.
English II with two major segments, i.e. Speaking and Listening and Reading and Writing is designed to help students to be more communicative and develop their fluency in the target language. The students will get exposure to the writing processes: outlining, drafting, revising and editing. They will be able to apply their knowledge, making different forms of structured written pieces, particularly argumentation, persuasion, description, narration, compare-contrast, cause-effect, process analysis, etc. Students will participate in class discussions and read essays and articles on a regular basis. They will participate and deliver formal speeches as individuals or in groups, maintaining appropriate pronunciation, pitch, stress, intonation, etc. Relevant issues of grammar usage, spelling and mechanics will also be a part of the course. The course will help them to gain knowledge related to writing a research paper.
Students’ active participation is ensured through motivation, encouragement, and reward. Teaching is implemented through learner-centered classroom, designed for optimal acquisition of the target language.
Apart from conducting the English courses of the university, English Language Institute also arranges debate, workshop, training, film show and the like on a regular basis. The entire efforts of the institute are dedicated to making learners capable of using English for academic and communication purpose.
ELI with its growing volume of erudite and dedicated faculty members is committed to help producing skilled graduates with a mission to address the thrust of the Globe.
